What it counts
As soon as there is text in the editor, WordBloom shows six live numbers: words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, lines and an estimated reading time. Every figure recalculates on each keystroke, so you can watch a draft grow toward a target without clicking anything.
Words vs. characters — which limit do you have?
Different platforms count differently, and using the wrong number is the usual reason a post or essay gets rejected. As a rule of thumb:
• Word limits are common for essays, assignments, articles and cover letters (for example a 500-word essay or a 300-word abstract). Use the Words figure.
• Character limits with spaces apply to most social posts and meta descriptions — a tweet, a bio, an SEO description capped around 155–160 characters. Use Characters.
• Character limits without spaces show up in some forms, databases and older systems. Use No spaces.
How reading time is worked out
The reading-time estimate assumes about 200 words per minute, a widely used average for adult silent reading. It is a guide, not a stopwatch: simple prose reads faster, while technical or code-heavy text reads slower. For a spoken estimate — a speech or video script — people usually speak nearer 130–150 words per minute, so expect spoken delivery to take a little longer than the on-screen number.
Tips for hitting a target length
To trim a piece down, watch the word count fall as you cut filler and merge sentences. To pad a thin draft, the Sentences and Lines counts help you see whether you are adding real points or just longer sentences. Need placeholder copy to test a layout?
